We treat many children at our clinic for a wide variety of conditions. We see children for sports injuries, musculoskeletal complaints, and also give parents advice about providing a healthy lifestyle for their children by addressing factors such as diet and appropriate exercise. It is not uncommon for children to develop sports injuries due to lack of flexibility or from improper training. Children suffer from many of the same injuries as adult practitioners of any sport, and often are injured more frequently due to the enthusiasm and vigor they put into all activities. Such injuries, if not treated at an early age, can lead to physical problems when they become teenagers and adults. An example of such a situation is Osgood Slatters Syndrome. This syndrome is common in boys who play soccer and shows as pain and inflammation below the knee. This is due to lack of flexibility in the quadriceps, and stress placed on an area called the Tibial Tuberosity, which is where the quadriceps attach to the Tibia. If this is not treated correctly, it can develop into more serious knee problems. But with the right therapy and exercise (stretching, active release technique ) children often resolve this problem within a short period of time. There are more obese and out-of-condition children today than in any previous time in history. Childhood illnesses related to these factors are increasing at an alarming rate. To address this, the Doctors at our clinic also focus on improving a child's diet through proper nutrition and exercise. We strongly believe in an integrated approach to a child's health. This includes working with the child primary health care practitioner, in respecting their perspectives, while providing parents with a framework for developing and maintaining long term health goals for their children. Dr. Abelson has been a marathon runner and triathelete for over 20 years, has taught numerous exercise and health clinics, and has a wide variety of experience in several sports (running, rock climbing, hiking, swimming, cycling, soccer, and other team sports). |
