Candidiasis (Yeast)

Individuals commonly develop a Candida infection after taking antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria that normally keep the Candida under control, allowing the Candida organism to grow unchecked. Pregnant women, diabetics, and obese people are also prone to Candida infections.

Treatment:

  • Acidophilus bacteria also can help to fight Candida in the upper intestinal tract.
  • Garlic (not Kyolic garlic), biotin, and caprylic acid have a direct yeast-killing effect in the intestine.
  • Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) and volatile oil from oregano. Both have antifungal properties. (Do not take when pregnant)
  • Shark liver oil has demonstrated an antifungal effect in laboratory studies.

Canker Sores

Canker sores, also known as mouth ulcers, apthous stomatitis and ulcerative stomatitis, are small painful ulcerations that have yellow-gray centers and a red border. Usually 1-2mm wide, they occur on non-keratinized mucosa inside the mouth: the inner side of the lips, the tongue, the back and floor of the mouth and the wall of the cheeks. They do not occur on the lips, the gums or the hard roof of the mouth. Ulcers can be single or can occur in clusters.

The cause of canker sores is uncertain, however, associations with human herpesvirus 6, food sensitivities, stress, and nutrient deficiencies have been suggested. They generally take 1-2 weeks to heal and may recur monthly or several times per year.

Canker sores must be differentiated from drug allergies, herpes simplex infection, Behcet's syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and squamous cell carcinoma. In some cases, biopsy of the ulcer may be necessary.

Conventional treatments include topical steroids, mouthwash, or an oral paste for symptomatic relief. In severe cases, systemic glucocorticoids may be prescribed. (About.com)

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Newsletter)

Carpal Tunnel Treatment Online

CTS can be caused by any repetitive motion that stresses the upper extremities of the body. The increased use of computers and their accompanying flat, light-touch keyboards that allow for high-speed typing, have resulted in an epidemic of injuries to the hands, arms, shoulders, and neck. The increased use of pointing devices like the computer mouse and trackball, which require repeated subtle movements, add to these injuries.

The thousands of repeated keystrokes and long periods of clutching and dragging with the mouse causes chronic irritation to soft-tissue (nerves, muscles, ligaments, fascia, and tendons). This irritation creates friction and pressure, which eventually leads to small tears within the soft-tissue. These in turn cause inflammation, decreased circulation, and swelling (edema).

Classical Definition of CTS

The classical medical definition of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is: ‘The impairment of motor and/or sensory function of the median nerve as it traverses through the Carpal Tunnel.’

The Problem with Tradition!

Splinting provides temporary relief, especially at night, but over the long term, results in: Decreased levels of oxygen reaching tissues. Poor oxygen levels are a primary accelerant of scar tissue creation. The formation of increased levels of adhesions between soft-tissues. Decreased strength in the arm due to disuse and muscle atrophy. Imbalances in body mechanics due to other muscles trying to compensate for the weaker muscles. These imbalances lead to further friction and adhesion formation.

Inaccurate Diagnoses

The median nerve is a peripheral nerve, composed of single cells, which runs the entire length of the arm. This is the nerve that is most commonly associated with carpal tunnel symptoms. Most traditional treatments focus upon the entrapment of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel area.

Research is showing that this traditional emphasis upon the carpal tunnel area is both inaccurate and ignores the greater picture. Dr. Michael Leahy (Creator of ART) reported that, in over 500 cases of peripheral nerve entrapment, only two cases involved the actual carpal tunnel. In the majority of CTS cases, the nerve entrapments actually occur further up the arm, closer towards the elbow. Our own clinical research has confirmed these findings. Conventional treatments rarely address these other entrapment sites, choosing instead to focus solely upon the carpal tunnel region.

Unfortunately, many practitioners are unaware of this information and continue to use standard medical tests and procedures that focus solely upon the area of the carpal tunnel. Non-specific, inaccurate testing methods often lead to the misdiagnosis (and treatment) of just a single entrapment site at the median tunnel, when in fact, nerve entrapments can occur along the entire length of the carpal nerve, from the shoulder to the tips of the fingers. Thus, it is no surprise that most medical procedures achieve very poor results when treating CTS.

The Active Release Perspective in treating CTS

Active Release Techniques is successful, where other traditional methods fail, because ART: Locates and removes the true, root cause of the problem – the adhesive restrictions that compress and constrain the median nerve, or other nerves, at multiple locations in the wrist, arm, shoulders, and neck.

Recognizes and eliminates the causes of Pseudo-CTS. Pseudo-CTS shows similar signs and symptoms to traditional CTS, but its cause is due to nerve entrapments at locations other than the carpal tunnel, and for other nerves than just the median nerve. Allows the practitioner to diagnose, find, and release multiple peripheral nerve entrapments along the entire kinetic chain – from the hand, to the shoulders, and into the neck.

Other techniques, particularly those using mechanical implements, can never reproduce the sensitivity or accuracy that ART can achieve. Basically, if you can’t feel the restriction, then you can’t find it, and you will miss the true cause of the problem.

ART is used to find the specific tissues that are restricted, and to physically work them back to their normal texture, tension, and length by using various hand positions and soft-tissue manipulation methods. When executed properly, the ART process treats the root cause of the injury by removing the restrictive adhesions that bind soft-tissues, and by allowing free movement of the nerve through the soft-tissues surrounding it. For example, when I perform these ART protocols, I can literally feel when the nerve entrapment has been released, and can often feel the nerve itself, as it moves through adjacent structures.
During a typical ART treatment, the practitioner:

  • Identifies both the primary and antagonistic muscles that are causing the injury.
Locates the restrictive adhesions that have formed and the direction in which these adhesions are aligned.
  • Determines which other structures are affected along the kinetic chain.
Uses the hands-on ART protocols to release the restrictions that are the cause of the problem.

Seems simple, doesn’t it – and the results speak for themselves. Complete resolution for over 90% of the CTS cases that we have treated with ART and rehabilitative exercises!

Cervical cancer

There are 2 main types of cervical cancers: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma . Cervical cancers and cervical precancers are classified by how they look under a microscope. About 80% to 90% of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, which are composed of cells that resemble the flat, thin cells called squamous cells that cover the surface of the endocervix. Squamous cell carcinomas most often begin where the ectocervix joins the endocervix. American Cancer Society

Chicken Pox

Chickenpox is a common disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is part of the herpesvirus family. Although many people associate the word herpes with genital herpes, the herpesvirus family is made up of nearly 100 kinds of viruses, eight of which cause disease in humans. Examples of different herpesviruses are herpes simplex virus (which causes cold sores and genital herpes infections), Epstein-Barr virus (which causes infectious mononucleosis), and varicella-zoster virus (which causes chickenpox and shingles). Varicella-zoster virus spreads in the air through coughs or sneezes or through contact with fluid from inside the chickenpox blisters. KidsHealth

Symptoms of Chickenpox
The first signs that a child is coming down with chickenpox usually include some combination of the following:

  • Moderate fever.
  • Headache.
  • Fatigue.
  • Achiness.
  • Sore throat.

A day or two after these first symptoms appear, a child with chickenpox will develop the tell-tale rash, usually characterized by the following:

  • It starts out flat and reddish, centered on the trunk of the body.
  • A day or so after it first appears, it spreads to the extremities, neck, and face, and turns from red splotches into masses of tiny pimples.
  • It is intensely itchy.

Cholesterol (Consult your physican)

Elevated cholesterol is associated with a greater-than-normal risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. While antioxidants can inhibit cholesterol from oxidizing onto the linings of the arteries, knowing and controlling your cholesterol levels is still an important step in preventing cardiovascular disease.

Estimates are that 52% of the total population have cholesterol levels of 200 mg/dL, and about 21% have levels of 240 or above. In adults, total cholesterol levels from 200 to 239 mg/dL are considered borderline-high, while levels above 240 are considered dangerously high. Knowing cholesterol numbers can allow a person to manage "fat intake," which has other benefits, such as lowering one's risk of various cancers caused by fat-soluble toxins. Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease in which the large intestine becomes inflamed and ulcerated, leading to episodes of bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Unlike Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis usually doesn't affect the full thickness of the intestine and never affects the small intestine. The disease usually begins in the rectum or sigmoid colon and spreads partially or completely through the large intestine. The cause of ulcerative colitis is not known, but heredity and an overactive immune response are suspected factors. Food allergies may also be a factor (D'Arienzo et al. 2000).

Congestive Heart Failure

The American Heart Association estimates that 4.7 million Americans have congestive heart failure (CHF) and that 400,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the coming year. Heart failure is the leading cause for hospitalization in people over the age of 65, and the risk for developing the disease increases with age. The risk for developing heart failure is slightly greater in men than in women. African-Americans are twice as likely to acquire the disease as Caucasians, and mortality from the disease is also twice as great in this group. Since the 1970s, heart failure has been on the increase because the number of people aged 65 or older has grown. Approximately 20% of CHF patients will die within 1 year of diagnosis, and 50% will die within 5 years.

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood throughout the body (but not all patients with heart failure have congestion). There are two categories of congestive heart failure: systolic and diastolic. In the systolic type of the disease, blood coming into the heart from the lungs may be regurgitated so that fluid accumulates in the lungs (pulmonary congestion). In the diastolic type, the heart muscle becomes stiff and cannot relax, leading to an accumulation of fluid in the feet, ankles, legs, and abdomen. Life Extension Foundation

Compartment Syndromes (Chronic)

Acute, traumatic compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency that can result in permanent nerve damage in as little is 24 hours.

A chronic, overuse compartment syndrome is usually not a surgical emergency but can over time develop into one. In the lower extremity It is typically a result of inflammation of the dorsiflexors of the foot and ankle.

It is best to ice the area after activity, stretch the muscles by grabbing the foot and toes with the opposite hand and pulling foot and toes into plantar flexion (down) and inversion. The muscles can the strengthened with surgical tubing.

Active Release Technique has been found to be very effective in the treatment of chronic compartment syndromes.

Conjunctivitis - Pink Eye

Commonly known as pinkeye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It is a fairly common condition and usually causes no danger to the eye or your child's vision. The inflammation can have many causes, the most common of which are infectious, allergic, and irritant. Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a long-term, chronic disorder of the intestine. The etiology is unknown. Crohn's disease causes the gastrointestinal tract to become inflamed and weak, making digestion difficult and causing general debility. It is a relatively rare disease, occurring in one to five people in every 10,000. Clustering of Crohn's disease occurs in families. In the United States, the annual incidence of the disease is about two out of 100,000 persons, with a slight predominance among females. The incidence of Crohn's disease is increasing in the Western world, with lifestyle factors as a likely cause. Life Extension Foundation
