Laryngitis

Laryngitis is hoarseness or loss of the voice. It often occurs with a cold or overuse of the voice and affects people of all ages. It is caused by an inflammation of the moist skin that lines the voice box and surrounding tissues. Laryngitis is usually not serious, but can make it difficult to communicate.

Leg Cramps

LEG CRAMPS DURING PREGNANCY

Leg cramps are very common among pregnant women in the second and third trimesters. Fortunately, there are ways of both preventing and alleviating leg cramps. While the cause of leg cramps during pregnancy is unknown, it is thought that they may be due to a neuromuscular irritability caused by an excess of phosphorus and a shortage of calcium circulating in the blood. It has also been suggested that a shortage of magnesium may be responsible. Magnesium aids in the function of nerves, bones and muscles; muscle spasms are a classic symptom of magnesium depletion. Thrombophlebitis

Thrombophlebitis (throm-bo-fluh-BI-tis) occurs when a blood clot and inflammation develop in one or more of your veins, typically in your legs. On rare occasions, thrombophlebitis (phlebitis) can affect veins in your arms.

The affected vein may be near the surface of your skin (superficial thrombophlebitis) or deep within a muscle (deep vein thrombophlebitis).

The cause often is prolonged inactivity, such as sitting during a long period of travel in an airplane or automobile or lengthy bed rest after surgery. The inactivity decreases blood flow through your veins and may cause a clot to form. Paralysis, certain types of cancer and use of the hormone estrogen also may lead to thrombophlebitis. An inherited tendency for blood clots places you at higher risk of thrombophlebitis.

When to Seek Medical Advice

See your doctor if you have a red, swollen or tender vein. In case the reason for the vein inflammation is a clot, you want to seek medical attention urgently, before the clot completely obstructs your vein or dislodges and causes other serious health problems

Nocturnal leg cramps

The cause of nocturnal leg cramps is not fully known. Dehydration may play a role for some people, while medications may cause them for others. The suspect medications include diuretics and the calcium channel blocker, nifedipine (Aldalat and Procardia). Certain medical conditions can cause leg cramps, including thyroid and endocrine disorders. Some serious conditions, such as diabetes and vitamin deficiencies, likewise can cause them.

Liver Problems

The liver is the largest organ (about the size of a football and averaging about 3.5 pounds) and has more functions than any other human organ. A person's entire blood supply passes through the liver several times a day, and at any given time there is about a pint of blood there. The liver produces and secretes bile (to be stored in the gallbladder until needed) that is used to break down and digest fatty acids. It also produces prothrombin and fibrinogen, both blood-clotting factors, and heparin, a mucopolysaccharide sulfuric acid ester that helps keep blood from clotting within the circulatory system. Lupus

  • Aromatic amines, silicone and silica dust, alfalfa sprouts, hydrazines, tartrazines, and UV light are environmental triggers that exacerbate the condition and should be avoided.
  • Regular aerobic exercise to build up endurance, and rest as needed.
  • Avoidance of both physical and emotional stress which may cause flareups.
  • High potency multivitamin.
  • A low salt, low saturated-fat diet.
  • Calcium and magnesium supplementation to offset bone loss (especially important when taking steroids).
  • Potassium, vitamins B6, D, and E, and zinc to offset nutritional depletion due to the use of steroids.
  • Melatonin to lower pain and induce sleep.
  • For arthritic symptoms, antioxidants, glucosamine, chondroitin, and fatty acids such as gamma-linolenic acid and eicosapaentaenoic acid (EPA). (Life extension Foundation)
