Mild cognitive impairment could mean you are on the road to alzhiemers disease
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an isolated deficit in recent memory and is often associated with decline to Alzheimer's disease (AD). What to hear somthing scarry "The incidence of Alzheimer's disease is doubling every 5 years". Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly and it is estimated to affect 4 million people in the US Its Cause: The evidence for a role of oxidative stress and free radicals in the development of Alzheimers disease is very extensive. A free radical is a molecule containing an unpaired electron, typically highly unstable and reactive. Free radicals can damage the molecular machinery of biological systems. Oxidative strees refers to a process in which the amount of free radicals increases, subsequent cell damage occurs, and disease results. This means that the body is not maintaining its healthy antioxidant protection. The more antioxidants you have in your body the less free radical activity. AD patients have markedly low antioxidant levels compared with non AD pesons. Free radical production and oxidative stress cause synaptic loss, nerve cell loss, amyloid protein deposition, and decline in brain acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Free radical production causes oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and neuro-inflammatory processes. The process of neural damage usally starts with start with a process called Lipid peroxidation. This is the process by which free radicals “steal” electrons from the fats in our cell membranes, resulting in cell damage and increased production of free radicals. is an early event in the pathogenesis of the MCI. Take your antioxidant co-factors An accumulation of oxidative damage in the mitochondria might constitute a continuous source of free radical damage and the progression of MCI to AD. MCI and AD subjects have lower levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and b-carotene. Patients with MCI and AD have lower levels of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase) as compared with controls. [Interestingly, low level lasers increase the productions of these enzymes]. The following antioxidants slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Increased intake of flavonoids, Mitochondrial antioxidants (like CoQ10), Ginkgo biloba, Alpha-lipoic acid (600 mg/day), Vitamins B12, thiamine, and folate The use of a single antioxidant is not optimal for quenching all the various types of free radicals that are produced in the AD brain. An increased intake of antioxidant micronutrients from fruits and vegetables is the best currently available strategy to prevent cognitive impairment.
